This month, you will participate in a project funded by a grant through the Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education organization. The focus of this project is to parallel through photography the ancient to medieval cultural heritage stories from other countries to the cultural heritage stories of local New England communities, particularly centered on Fitchburg. Cultural heritage is the manifestation of common human experiences, and, by drawing these parallels, we can emphasize those connections and the shared need for preservation and the study of the past. You will join one section of ENGL 3030 The Middle Ages, another section of ENGL 2200 British Literature I, and one section of ENGL 3620 The Classical Tradition in Western Literature over the course of the 2017-2018 year. During this time, these courses will:
  • suggest the local sites for parallels with the photos of ancient to medieval sites taken by Dr. Tracy;
  • curate the photography exhibit (physical and digital) and prepare the exhibit guide using research skills developed in the class; and
  • write the exhibition tags for the exhibit and exhibit guide.
One physical exhibit will be held at the Fitchburg Art Museum in September of 2018. Another exhibit will be held on campus, time to be determined.

Instructions
During this assignment: you will complete research on the photo/text pairing selected from those provided by the ENGL 3030 course. You will then prepare a dossier that presents the researched information in a clear, organized, and useful manner. This dossier will include Works Cited citations (a minimum of three) for each of the sources found. The dossier will also include a minimum of three suggestions of local cultural heritage sites that could pair with the medieval one, including a rationale for each one.

Special offer: if any of you would like to be part of the overarching project - possibly propose a poster for the FSU Undergraduate Research Conference and work on the digital and physical exhibitions beyond classwork, speak with me! This is a great opportunity for extra undergraduate research and professional work for your portfolio.
